Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) commanded attention with her striking beauty stunning red hair and passionate depictions of strong characters. Her acting was powerful and a confident lady. Whether it was her getting saved by Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), falling in love in the blackened sky of Walter Pidgeon in How Green Was My Valley (How Green Was My Valley, 1941) or learning about the miracle of life from Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street (Miracle on 34th Street 1947) or battling wits in the face of John Wayne in The Quiet Man (The Quiet Man 1952) Maureen O'Hara was the first biography written about the screen icon, dubbed the Queen Of Technicolor. Aubrey Malone traces the life of the screen icon from Dublin which is where she grew up, to Hollywood's heights. The author draws on the Irish Film Institute production notes on films, as well as old magazines and newspapers. Malone analyzes the relationship between the actress and frequent co-star John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the hotly debated question of whether or not the screen diva was a feminist or antifeminist persona. She was an iconic film star in the golden age of cinema, yet her preference to keep her privacy private as well as her habit of making statements that did not align with her personal choices has left her in the shadows. The biography that has been released gives us the chance to see the person who created her iconic image of the past.
